Over the weekend The Daily Mail stirred up even more rumors of Maggie Smith's Downton Abbey departure with a story that quoted an anonymous source saying that Smith "wanted season three to be her last" and had asked Julian Fellowes "to write her out at the end of the season."
Today, The New York Times has an article quoting a press representative for Carnival Films, who produces Downton Abbey along with Masterpiece (PBS), denying any truth to the rumor:
A press representative for Carnival Films said on Monday that the Daily Mail report was “complete nonsense,” adding, “We never comment on future story lines but it’s not true that she’s leaving.”Others were less definitive in their rebuttals: A press representative for Masterpiece, said that it did not discuss future stories on “Downton Abbey” and Ms. Smith’s representatives at Independent Talent Group in London declined to comment.
Hopefully this is the truth and puts an end to this awful rumor! What's funny is Masterpiece saying they don't discuss future stories on Downton Abbey after producer, Rebecca Eaton's comments on the upcoming season lol.
