"Stuff Mrs Patmore Says"

Oh sure the Dowager Countess gets most of the glory for delivering memorable zingers but she's not the only character to have great lines. Mrs Patmore is one of my favorite characters on Downton Abbey. The writers have done an amazing job balancing her fierceness with her softer side. Yes, she runs a strict kitchen but we can also see her vulnerable side at times. She will deliver a zinger to Daisy & then touch us with her tender emotions having lost a nephew in the war. I loved when she helped serve the meals to the Veterans in the make shift soup kitchen & the soft spot she had for William. Lesley Nicol is marvelous at portraying her!

Downton Abbey Cooks has a terrific blog post all about Mrs Patmore and her memorable quips, plus it contains a yummy recipe for homemade apple sauce so it's a win, win. Here's an excerpt:

Mrs. Patmore, not just the Gordon Ramsay of Downton
Mrs. Patmore, head cook, can also hold her own in the battle of the wits. Not unlike other celebrity chefs known for their temper, she can strip the hide off a scullery maid with the best of them, and without the need to curse. The brilliant writing team has also taken the care to round out her character to reveal a kind hearted soul with a family, who is fiercely protective of William, because of her own loss in the War. She reminds me a great deal of my own grandmother who taught me how to cook. So this is tribute to Mrs. Patmore with some of my favorite quotes.
Mrs. P: Listen to me (to Daisy) and take those kidneys up to the servery before I knock you down and serve your brains as fritters.
Mrs. P: Daisy, I said you could go for a drink of water, not a trip up the Nile.
Daisy: I was only trying to help.
Mrs. P: Oh!…Judus was only trying to help, I suppose, when he brought the Roman Soldiers to the Garden.
