Lady Rosemary Visits the Real Downton Abbey

Rosemary Harris, from Jungle Red Writers, blogs about her fantastic visit to Highclere Castle. As a  Downton Abbey addict she was thrilled to be able to see the place where all the magic happens. Plus her husband was a regular 'knight in shining armor' with the way he saved the day and scored the tickets!

...I googled the home. Yes! They did give tours and they were less than 2 hours outside of London. I could take a day trip.

But they were sold out for the day we arrived. And I couldn't leave earlier because mof a work commitment. And that was the last day until June when the house would be open to the public. I emailed four times. No ticket brokers. No packages. No hotel packages. No waiting lists. I was as plucky and as optimistic as one could be in an email. I dropped "the London Book Fair" as if to suggest I was the more famous Rosemary Harris. To no avail. I reported each failure to my husband and then he surprised me. "I got the tickets. Do you want the house, the gardens and the Egyptian exhibit?" I was flabbergasted. It wasn't clout or a close personal relationship with Prince William.

Wouldn't we all love a man as good as that?!!

  1. It was a wonderful trip! Standing in the library, sitting on the bench under the tree, peeking into Mr. Pamouk's room. I actually went back three days later, after the castle was closed to the public to snoop around. (Like a stalker.) I saw a helicopter parked on the grounds but only workers. I also camped out for a long lunch at the Carnarvon Arms where I had read in a local magazine that cast and crew sometimes ate, but didn't see anyone. I have never been this much of a geek about a television show.
