What Do We Know About Downton Abbey Season 4?

***Update: Since this post we have done a major update on what is going on in Downton Abbey Season 4. Click here to check out the very latest news!

Downton Abbey is adding its first black character.

The character is called Jack Ross. He is black, good looking, charming, 25 - 30 year old musician/singer at an exclusive club in the 20s.

Another new character is a party-loving cad called Sir John Bullock who “must be able to act drunk”.

There will also be a nanny added since both Tom and Mary have been left as single parents. *sad face*

Series creator, Julian Fellowes, told TV Guide that "there is a lovely nursery story" in season 4.

Does anyone else think that there might be some Nanny & Tom action? I try not to think about it but I just can't help it, I mean after all they already had the new maid, Edna, trying to get her hooks into him in the Christmas episode.

With the exit of Dan Stevens (boo hoo!) at the end of series three, there will be a potential suitor for Mary.

TV Line reports, "the show is looking for a (naturally!) handsome thirtysomething actor to come courting as Lord Anthony Gillingham."

Executive Producer, Gareth Neame, said “In any relationship drama, the will-they-or-won’t-they is always more interesting than married couples. So actually what we’ve been able to do is reset [Lady Mary]. She has to start again, and that will be much more interesting.”

Miranda's Tom Ellis has been rumored as a possible love interest. This rumor can be put to rest as Tom has joined the cast of ABC's Gothica.

I don't know how I feel about this. While no one expects Mary to pine away forever for Matthew, I don't want her running to the first man that comes along either. She needs some time to grieve. Who knows how this new relationship will come across on screen. I guess we just have to hope for the best & trust Julian Fellowes to deliver something the viewers will be accepting of.

Just a word about Dan Stevens departure....Dan Stevens wanted to pursue other interests, that is why there is no more Matthew on Downton Abbey. He was signed for 3 years of Downton and when those 3 years were up he wanted out. He would not renew his contract or even agree to appear in 1 episode in season 4. Dan discusses why he left here & Julian Fellowes talks about it here.

I felt so invested in Matthew but to a certain extent I hope Dan Stevens career crashes and burns for doing this to us I'm not bitter.

We know that there will be a time jump in season 4, Julian Fellowes has confirmed it. He said in this recent New York Times interview, season 4 will begin 6 months after Matthews death, "we begin Series 4 six months later. We don’t have to do funerals and all that stuff. That’s all in the past by then."

Thanks to Julian Fellowes interview with Digital Spy we also know that Lady Mary will be the dominant focus of Season 4 and that Shirley MacLaine's character, Martha Levinson, might make an appearance again.

What’s next for Anna & Bates?

Now that Bates is free, Joanne Froggatt (Anna) teased at least a little bit of good news for the couple in a PBS live online chat she did with viewers. "You certainly see Anna and Bates in times of happiness, which I think was well needed," Although she added that, of course, there will also be drama. "I'm afraid I can't say much but I don't think you'll be disappointed. As an actress you always want to play the drama."

"We have just had the read-through for Series 4 today and I am thrilled with the whole thing, including Anna and Bates's story," Joanne continued. "I obviously can't say more than that but I think it may be the best yet and there are certainly aspects of Anna's character that have never been seen before ... I think these scripts are the best yet. [Julian Fellowes] has done such an incredible job. "

Also, she said, Anna is getting a new look! "I get a slightly new hairstyle, very exciting!"

Season 4 will not be a continuation of death like we saw in season 3.  Fellowes said that we don't "want it turning into 'Midsomer Murders,' where they live in the same village and 450 people get murdered," I hope so!!! Please keep all our favorite characters alive!!!

Filming for season 4 is currently underway.

Downton Abbey will air in the Fall 2013 on ITV in the UK and in January 2014 in the US on PBS.

What would you like to see happen in season 4? Thoughts?

  1. I'm hoping the nurse is really nice since all my favorite nice characters have been killed off (Lavinia, Sybil, William)!

  2. Lady mary is my favorite character, and michelle dockery plays her part very well so im excited to see season 4 centered around her.;-)

  3. I want to see some mourning for Matthew. He was THE dominant character since Episode 2 and will be sorely missed and we should see everyone in the series Missing him. Episode 5 is soon enough to have a man interested in mary.

I wish Dan had stuck around til the end of the series.

    1. Agreed. I read that series 4 starts 6 months later so we'll miss mourning with the family. That really bothers me because they left us knowing more than the family at the end of the episode and then the family moves on without us. How are we supposed to move on??

      Delete
    2. I would expect to see SOME mourning for Matthew. A nice and sweet person for Tom.. Most importantly, I DO NOT like having to wait till next year. Why can't they air it the same time in the US and they do in the UK??!!

    4. Absolutely! Whay do we have to wait soooo long?

    5. I agree, and wonder if the decision to skip over this indicates some bitterness on the part of the writers and producers with regard to Mr. Stevens's departure. If so, that is a shame. Perhaps, however, they will deal with the aftermath in flashbacks.

    6. I would like to see the family told about Matthew's accident and some of the mourning, After all we are mourning too. I am disappointed that it will start 6 months down the road. I could watch this every night or at least once a week, rather than 6 weeks or whatever it is. But it is extremely good. I hope the good writing continues. I love Maggie Smith.

    7. to those worried about mourning for Matthew, in the face of WW1 the upper class tradition of mourning for years had come to an end for most. If Lord Grantham wants to keep "The Olde Ways", maybe the black crepe may stay up longer. But we did have 2 losses with in a short time, 1 year?, so maybe they hold on for a while.

  4. Downton Abbey will not be the same without Dan Stevens as Matthew . It was the storyline of Mary and Matthew that kept me interested in watching Downton .Dan did such an excellet job in the role of Matthew . I will not be watching Season 4 as I am not interested in watching Lady Mary with another love interest .

    1. I felt the very same way for a few weeks & then when I thought about how Dan wanted to leave/asked to leave, I got mad & him & said I'll be watching season 4 just for spite & I hope Mary mourns & then finds someone even better :)

    2. I thought the samething about Matthew leaving...but why the show has to suffer?? He decided to leave...so let him suffer now...I hope no one goes to see him on Broadway..but is not a nice thing to say,but I am mad @ him...I will see the series to the end...

    3. The classic career mistake for Dan Stevens, see Farrah Fawcett and Shelly Long. Would one more season have killer him? The show won't miss a beat. That's what they generally don't get. Now, if Mr Fellows leaves, that's a problem. Steven's won the lottery and lost the ticket. Good luck to him...

    4. totally agree. the show is dead to me without them together. :(

    5. I told my husband while watching the last episode that something was going to happen to Matthew When Mary had to leave and come back early from Scotland because she wasn't feeling well and wouldn't let him come with her. I hated being right but when the baby was born and it was a boy and Mary said"your heir" I knew it! How many women tell the new dad to go home and tell the family especially when there is a phone and"valet" drivers to bring them to the hospital. Did no one else but me see this coming?
I love this show but I hate how the other girls didn't let money define them but Mary does! Its time for focus to go on Edith, she is so over due for a nice looking fella to come into her life. Patiently waiting on season 4..

    6. I'm surprised to see how many other viewers feel as I do, that a bright light has gone out with the death of Matthew as Dan Stevens leaves the show. But we have to give Season IV a chance, I'm confident that it can carry on brilliantly without him, it just won't be the same, is all. Dan Stevens character gave the show ballast. We'll have to see what they come up with to replace it. After all, the rest of that great cast deserves some credit too.

  5. You are so right on regarding your comments about Dan Stevens' career.

  6. I was certainly very much p'd off at that Christmas Special. What a nitwits those script writers. Killing Matthew off killed off the series for me; he carried the House-in-Development.

  8. I had accidentally read about Matthew's demise a few months back. When I rec'd the season 3 dvds I couldn't wait to see what happened and had an orgy of viewing. I'd like to see Edith stop picking the wrong guys. Bates is starting to seem a little creepy and I actually felt sorry for Thomas. BTW saw Dan Stevens in The Heiress on Broadway and not so sure he should have left DA so soon. A little bland.
Can I SAY, THANK YOU DAA for letting me rage on like this about fictional characters? My husband's starting to think I'm weird.

    ReplyDelete

    1. No you are not weird...I was disappointed that Dan Stevens would not be back especially since hid character was blossoming as the next Earl.......let's hope Mary's next love is just as strong even stronger than Matthew...

  9. Thank you for your comment and you are very welcome!

I agree Edith needs to find a good man! Hopefully S4 will be good to Edith.

I've heard that from other people too about Dan. I think he should have stayed a little longer too. I mean look at Alan Alda on MASH. He was there forever!

    2. Rosemary, I just did same as you (without the prior knowledge on what was in store for Dan), and my jaw hit the floor! it will also put his mother's current position in jeopardy i would imagine and her life would once again turn on its head. I'd like to put my vote for season 5 as being Lady Edith's time to shine. Her career in journalism has put them all in a spin, and her new found romance will do just that too! Wasn't a fan of her character in Season 1, but Season 2 she really started coming into her own. Let her prove all her nay-sayers in her own family wrong, and have them all eating humble pie! hoping her character keeps going from strength to strength, and that it doesn't just become another series "all about mary".... Would also like to see Thomas continue with the estate reforms and also become a force to be reckoned with - shocking them all off the moral high ground that the majority of the family seem to gather round itself like a cloak. cheers / Den

  13. Haven't seen Hugh Grant in anything for a while. How bout a season or two on Downton as Mary's new husband? Actually would prefer it be James Purefoy but I think he's on TV now. NOOO...James Purefoy as Edith's husband who finds Mary a bore...YES...I should write this show. The audience for Downton has got to be all female anyway - let's make it worth watching! I would love to see Downton turn into a show like Extra's with a big name appearance each week.

    ReplyDelete

    1. You feel the capacity to write the show yet assume it is a female audience only? Better to let you just watch. :) Drama does not dictate viewership, it may only lean it a little.

    2. How about Rupert Penray-Jones??? sorry if I got his name wrong...very handsome English actor

      Delete
    3. Anon....I LOVE James Purefoy but he is currently in "The following". I'm over Hugh Grant - same role, different script. He wouldn't add anything new to this character. For that matter I'd prefer Colin Firth (yummy). But Purefoy is a brilliant suggestion. I think the script needs a good scottish suitor in it. talk about your drama. LOL.

  14. Omg are you crazy people? Even if Matthew is dead doesn't mean the whole series is gone bye bye! NO! NO! NO! It just means more drama more excitement and more episodes and that means Downton Abbey isn't ending soon! I loved Matthew and all but stop watching Downton Abbey just because he's gone? That's crazy! I AM WATCHING THIS TILL THE END! I LOVE DOWNTON ABBEY!

  16. Keep Matthew's character and allow another actor to play the role. It will take some getting used to but after a little while fans will embrace. This is done all the time in Soap Opera's. For example, Carly on General Hospital played by two different actresses. Then the original actress who played Carly years later played Claudia. So... it can work. Keep Matthew. Dan's decision should not alter the existance of Matthew.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That is exactly what I was thinking...why not let another actor play the already existing role. Poorly written/having another death scene.
Accommodate the story, not the actor.

      Delete
    2. Exactly...get another Matthew, and we'll overlook it. Stop filming Season 4 without Matthew!!! How I've suffered for their relationship to let it end so tragically. Did anyone really notice the new Darren on Bewitched?

      Delete
    3. Yes, I agree. In Y&R I totally got used to new Jack, new Jill, new Ashley... It is done all the time, and we would transfer our affections to the new Matthew.

      Delete
    4. But just think, this could be like Scarlet O'Hara and Tara--Mary could make the estate profitable and have to become a business woman now that Matthew is gone. It could be very interesting. Now think about a dark, handsome and Clark Gable type that will not let Mary yank his chain. Mary needs a stronger man. This could be a very passionate relationship that would heat up the screen.

      Delete
    5. Sorry people- NO WAY - there will NOT be another Matthew - that path is ridiculous - people will not be able to relate to him and because he is a hugely invested character that would never work - we need to accept he is gone. I am absolutely heartbroken, but I know life goes on - as it really REALLY does in REAL life - we have to go on.

  23. Can't believe Matthew die!! I was so sad/angry that thought about not watching the show anymore; cancel our girlsfriends trip to England, inspired by DA English Castles and scenery, this coming summer; and forget about buying the PBS DVD collections....but leave Maggie Smith...impossible. I can't believe Dan Stevens felt he had a solid ground after only 3 seasons at DA. He doesn't realize he broke many, many hearts and specially, broke bridges that conduct to respect and admiration from his fans and coworkers. If someone goes to his play on Broadway, please, take a picture of him from Downton Abbey and let him see it. Do this in honour of all of us around the globe that are upset and disappointed that he left...or die!

  25. So devistated to see Matthew's character gone! Good luck to him, but I'm a very disappointed fan. I guess "there's just something about Mary" because apparently season 4 is wrapped around her...again. Agree that Edith should have more of a role and find a good guy rather than all these duds!!! Perhaps a little less death next season? At least of our favorite characters?

What is with it with you Yanks, you're determined to America-fy our lovely English TV programme! It's Englishness is why it's so popular, so leave them all here! Couldn't care less about Mary and Matthew - downstairs is where all the good characters are anyway, save for the Dowager and Edith. I want to see more of Thomas (that's Barrow, not the imaginary Thomas Branson), both in terms of storylines, and nakedness. He is the best character by a mile. Matthew was wooden and boring.

    1. ugh I am so heartbroken about Matthews character being killed off. That is such A cop out move.I dislike Mary as do many other fans however Matthew brought out the best in her. As a couple they had many ups and downs and even difficulty getting pregnant. It was nice to see let the fun we had a family of the own and an heir to continue the legacy of downton abbey. I was however relieved to see that they will be a season 4 I honestly thought that this was it which really saddens me until I decided to be nosey do a Google search to see if it really was true. I hope season 4 does bring back Shirley MacLaine's character... Love her sass...especially when she went head to head with Grandmama...lol.will also love to see edith in love and happy for once. Also for Branson 2 find a new love and mother for his daughter and to become his own man and really stick it 2 Lord Grantham.

    2. Ditto-Mary without Matthew is just nasty and hopefully she will develope some talents as she just makes rude comments and isn't a very great character. I understand Dan Stevens wish to move on but he was the heart/soul of DA...everyone grouses about something all the time but he could see straight through to Lady Mary and what needs to be done to save the place...cause out there somewhere if they take it to 1929 is a blistering Great Depression. Lady Edith deserves some really great guy/new guy is great if he just didn't come with so many strings...Edith is coming into her own and deserves some relationship break. Lady Mary didn't change much after Sybil's passing, just continued to be her nasty self.

  28. I would like to see Robert turn to Branson as he did with Mathew. I have a feeling that Branson will have a prominent role in the family. It will be interesting to see how Mary moves on after Mathew..( bad Dan bad bad). Edith finally needs a break. Please give her a man who is not a cripple or unavailable. Would love to see Shirley McL come back for a visit, she makes me smile and stirs up the dust in the drawing room.I think Isobel will find an accomodating shoulder in the doctor...that is a great couple. And maybe Carson will finally admit his feelings for the housekeeper.

  29. they squeezed matthew mary plot dry...you want to watch them have affairs, become drunks? Mary is pragmatic knows her duty is to remarry. Anyone else mite try getting OWN life. Its TV, HELLO!

  30. As Matthew's car sped along, I began crying, "No......no..... don't do that to Mary and the little heir!" This show has become "real" to me like no other, really quite a phenomenon. In spite of my disgust with so much death, sorrow is often visited unevenly on families in reality, so I'll eagerly await season 4. There will certainly be an expanded role for Branson now, perhaps a young bride named Rose? Daisy maturing to become owner of one of the farms and leave service? Anna and Thomas both seem prepared to move up in their careers. O'Brien to go work for Shrimpy's wife, who will shortly find herself penniless (until Rose marries Branson in MY scenario)? It is SO hard to wait!!

    1. Rose and Branson are exactly whom I'm expecting to get together...both young, passionate, not handcuffed to tradition. They will have a daughter who will marry the son and heir of Mary and Matthew. Little Sybbie (Sybil and Branson's daughter) will have her mother's spirit and go off to America once of age. I also think Isobel Crawley and Dr. Clarkson will get together (OK...I'm older...it would be nice)...so many possibilities!

      Delete
    2. I like the idea of Isobel Crawley and Dr. Clarkson getting together, but I dislike the idea of Rose and Tom Branson. She'd be a horrible mother to his child. What I see happening is that Mary Crawley and Tom Branson get together and raise their children together. She's already his child's godmother.

    3. I was fantasizing about the wild Rose waking Tom from his grief from her first appearance at Downton. Mary is a bitch and way too conventional to force on Tom. I would probably stop watching.

    2. YES! That's exactly who i thought of for a new love interest for Mary. Colin Firth would be an excellent choice for a new character. He would be great at playing a strong character, is good looking, and an excellent actor. i would have chosen Hugh Grant to play Matthew if they kept his character alive - but they killed him off so my vote goes to Colin!!

Wow Dan Stevens that wasa real smart career choice. downton will go on and continue to be a success and you left it to do a stupid broadway show...wow you crushed my hopes and dreams for the show and spoiled the whole thing for me because i am absolutely devistated! 38. Speaking about Lady Mary, what was her mystery "procedure" she had done in London? I mean the child may not even be Matthew's and may not even be the rightful heir. if something like that ever came out it would ruin mary and Downton. Mary will become a whitchy poo and be a jerk to everyone and they would kick her out.

  40. I just hope the next season doesn't start with "Two years later..." that would be kind of a drag. I want reactions..hair-tearing..wailing! And then stiff-upper lipping.
I think James really is attracted to Thomas but can't admit it to himself. Yet. Tom and Rose could work but I'd rather see Gwen (the secretary) come back as his love interest. Will Mrs. Crawley find comfort in the arms of the good doctor? Will Carson and Hughes ever get together? Will Daisy and Alfred start a business with William's father? Will Sir Richard come back into the picture? Will O'Brien's secret come out? can't wait for next season...

Thanks for your comments and visiting DAA!!

  43. I too am devestated by Matthew being killed off, but after hearing Julian Fellows on how Dan wanted to persue other things and how he and Mary could not be astranged( and you know we would have hated that) I will continue to be a DA. fan as I have been for a very long time. I just wish we across the pond didn't have to wait so long to get started again. looks like reruns for me.

  44. I think it would have been better had they started season 4 with Matthew in a comma with bandages all around his face so you cant tell who he is. Mary can visit and look at him, but no speaking from Matthew. While Mary waits for what seems to be an eternity for Matthew to pull through, other men believing he never will try to pursue Mary...imagine some of the interesting drama with that. This way should Dan decide to return in season 5, he can.

  45. How about a Dallas episode repeat when Bobby Ewing was deadfor most of the season. Then lo and behold his wife wakes up from a nightmare and Bobby is in the shower. Same idea Mary wakes up after having the baby and the whole thing was a bad dream. Matthew come back from the dead!

  48. I have devoured this series like nothing ever before in my life. It seems like now to me, everything the show has worked so hard for 3 years to accomplish - an heir for Downton, husband for Mary, a baby and future heir - is totally wasted. The entire purpose has been lost with the death of Matthew and all the investment we as fans put into them finally ending up together, ends so abruptly and tragically that it makes me a little underenthused to pour myself into another season. Matthew was an absolutely critical character, and loved by pretty much everyone, so I feel that it is very selfish of him to just up and leave without giving the fans - you know, the ones who made him and this show a success in the first place - any satisfaction at all. I think he's full of himself and forgotten how he got to where he is. The series wouldn't last forever, geez! Give your fans something to go on! The series has tanked for me.

  49. Just caught up. I am beyond disappointed that Matthew will be gone, a large part of the show was based on him. Terrible disappointment.

  50. It is just me or is it a bit stupid that they've used this story line twice: baby gets born and parent get dead. come on. really? this show has really gotten lame. the whole season 3 was a huge downhill turn. And please, lady Mary is a totally catty bitch, it was pretty hard to understand why matthew would love her, since he admits how mean she could be. What's great about her? I agree with Mrs Hughes who could never really understand why Carson loved her so much. the only time she shows any kindness is to Anna, and I think that's only because Ana saved her ass in season 1 (re: turkish lover). sigh, personally I think it's time for a totally new period drama with fresh story lines and much better writing.

  52. I accidentally found out about Matthew's death in December and had to keep it a secret from all my friends and mourn alone so I am over it. Frankly Matthew and Mary were dull--she was pretty intolerant of his opinions for much of the season. Next season Mary needs to find someone she can't push around and stop being so mean to Edith, Edith needs to find someone suitable or become a complete Bohemian and join the Bloomsbury group, Anna and Bates need some happiness and some kids, Tom Branson needs another interesting suffragist, Thomas needs to be nicer permanently, Mrs. O'Brien needs to go to India and be a lady's maid because she causes too much trouble below stairs, Daisy needs to move to William's father's farm, and Carson and Moseley need to declare their love for each other and resurrect Carson's Music Hall act! I can't wait.

  55. I think life throws us curve balls, and Julian Fellowes is certainly up to the task of hitting season 4 out of the park, without or without Dan Stevens. Sad to see D.S. go, but the possibilities are endless for new plots and subplots.

I think we could see a spark of interest between Rose and Tom Branson. I hope we do not see the last of Rose's parents, and that their lovely estate in Scotland could be saved/incorporated by Tom Branson... a man proving to be a superman on all fronts.
Perhaps Julian Fellowes could lure the American actor, Edward Norton into the cast for a season or two? He was fine in "The Painted Veil" and "Moonrise Kingdom" and I think he would bring a continuing spark to the cast as a love interest for Mary.
Interesting, too, is the passion Albert has professed for cooking --- could this lead to understudy with Mrs. Patmore and an appreciation finally for Daisy? And what about that farm that will one day be Daisy's? Could the dots be connected/ Seems that Julian Fellowes does not use small threads into the plot without weaving later.
And I predict that Patrick (or the fellow that claims to be) will re-enter the picture. This could provide needed storyline angst now that Bates is free...
OH I am so glad to have found DAA... my family considers me bonkers about this show.... especially when I gush on about my favorite charters Mrs. Patmore, Mrs Hughes and Mr. Carson.

Scott. Colin Firth is a great choice but a little too old I think.

  58. I'm done watching this show - I was engrossed through all the rough times and the good. The characters were engaging, the storylines enjoyable. It was pleasant Sunday night entertainment. However, with the cheap shot death of Matthew at the end, I've had enough. What a completely stupid waste of a character. I read that the writers thought he'd become predictable - shame on you. Then write something challenging! My only consolation is that Dan Stevens is at least on to bigger and better roles now. I'm thoroughly disappointed and feel embarrassed for Masterpiece. Totally trashy soap opera tactics being played out in what could have been a really captivating program well into the future. You've lost this viewer for good.

I'm wondering if no one sees the obvious and most natural progression of events on this show: Mary Crawley and Tom Branson, who identify with and console one another in the deaths of their respective spouses, and end up getting together to raise their children together. Mary's already the godmother to Sybil and Tom's child. Has no one else considered this eventuality?

I agree, Mary needs to share the stage a bit more with Edith, who really needs to have some success in her love life at last and maybe even emerging as a central part in pulling the family through. Would also like to see the splendid Colin Firth as a love interest for Mary..

Lady Mary should have at least two new suitors, but agree that Colin Firth would be a nice match ( need to see them onscreen together)chemistry must be there. Anna, and Bates also need to become parents. Tom, and Rose are perfect for each other, both feisty, energetic characters. Tom has grown, and has been elevated by his marriage to Sybil, therefore the nanny would not due....!!! Give Edith her happy ever after lets kill of the wife to Mr. Gregson and let romance Edith, and marry her.

  65. So whatever happened to Patrick, who showed up during the wartime rehab
at Downton Abbey. He said he had been rescued from the Titanic and taken
to Canada and since he had total amnesia taken on another name. But he
had volunteered for the Army (Canada still "belonged" to England then)
and when he was injured (severe facial burning, etc) he regained his
knowledge of who he was. Edith was the only one who really was able to remember him but the rest shoved him out and he left.
Why couldn't he come back? He was the heir that Matthew took the place
of, and if he is still living (and why not) he has a right to be back with
his family. He also would be suitable for either Edith or Mary.

    1. It was hinted that he might have been a phony, and the real Patrick Crawley did die. A disfigured man for Edith? That would be an unfortunate thing, since there was no plastic surgery during those days.

  66. Sybil's death shook me to my core. And although I think it will be difficult to replace Matthew in viewer's hearts, I think that Mary's character is strong enough to go "man-less" for awhile. Julian Fellowes has done a marvelous job developing Branson into a strong presence in the family. Would love to see them bring Gwen the maid from Season 1 back as a love interest for Branson. After all, she owes her career to Sybil and has the same ambition and drive that Branson has shown.

  67. Here's what needs to happen. We all need to sign a petition DEMANDING that Matthew's character still lives on, with a different actor. Why re-write a perfectly good story just because Dan decided to quit? No other relationship will be as perfect as Matthew and Mary Crawley. I love his character, and I love this show. I am too obsessed with Downton Abbey fan, so I will not give up watching this show, but I must say, I am so extremely disappointed in Dan Stevens, and hurt that the show chose to kill off his character. P.S. I can totally imagine some sort of love interest happening with Rose and Tom's character.

  68. I too mourn the loss of Matthew. He was in many ways the moral center of the family. I will miss those moments when he looked at Mary and their eyes devoured one another. Such depth of love. But we all know the best tribute we can pay our departed loved ones, is to continue to live. To keep them close and live each moment. Otberwise, their memory is in vain.

The blood from his his left ear flowing over his cheek,
Sinched that he was gone !

After seeing the program on the estate were downton abbey is filmed "secrets of highcleer" five days later,

Helped put things into story line perspective.
Mathew's over joyed experience of fathering a child & heir with lady mary & his passion for driving his car on the road in the estate of downton abbey to tell the family,
"come see" ,distracted his driving awariness of the road
Never thinking that there would be another delivery vehicle coming out from the abbey !

This kind of behavior could have been gleaned out of the
History of the earls at highcleer

For me it made the 3rd.finale posible & more in step with
The storyline & history of the setting. ( the real earl lived
Through is his several roll overs with Puntured lung &

  74. I fear the whole plot is evolving towards an egalitarian scenario in which Branson will be Lord of the Manor, and his son the heir apparent.Something, somehow will happen to Baby George. Polio perhaps? Hemophilia from inbreeding? Then the irony will finally be complete, as the chauffeur and socialist Branson, becomes the father of an Earl, in or around Season 6,the finale and WW2...on the horizon.Ah me. It IS a soap opera, we must remember!

  75. I can't believe we won't see the shock and horror of Lady Mary, Isobel, and the family learning about Matthew's death, just as we never saw their joy with Lady Mary announcing her pregnancy. And Downton Abbey is compared to a soap opera?!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I would love to see Lady Mary, as a capable business woman, acting ahead of her time, mourning for Matthew's death, and being focused to raising her child. Lord Grantham could continue managing the estate, on Matthew's ideas, with the help of Branson. I would not like to see either Mary or Branson flirting with anyone, non the least between them. It would be very dramatic to see Mary fighting against the trend, who would like to see her paired to a strong man. She may be elevated to become a strong charachter, the pillar of Downton. Romance for Mary could come at the end of series 4, and in the meantime, we could see various gentlemen throwing themselves to her and her fortune, and Mary rejecting them. Edith deserves a better fortune, and I would love to see her married maybe to an American or to a progressive British who would urge her to continue writing. Downton is not just about Mary and Mathhew, but the whole spirit, values and the progression to a new era. I think this should be the focus, the transition from old to new values and not just who is the best suitor for Mary...

    1. True, but Lady Mary's character is very old fashioned (she belongs to the old-fashioned team right up there with Robert and Carson) so seeing her in need of change is a bit far reaching though this life-altering experience might just change her. This could be a good turn.

1.) Bates holding his own in a bar fight defending Anna.
2.) Bates discussing more of his past with Anna.
    3.) Anna's family to visit?

I admit some apprehension when Joanne Froggatt talked about impending drama for series 4. Don't know if I can handle too much for them! I LOVE seeing them happy and don't see why we can't have a season of that.

4.) Spinoff: "Bates Investigates". Would take place during the Golden Age of crime fiction in England, the 1920's. A great way to get Brendan Coyle in every frame.

    or

5.) Spinoff: "Bates and Bates". John and Anna investigative TEAM during the Golden Age of British crime fiction. What a team! John is tough, Anna is smart. Slightly reminiscent of the Thin Man movies, with wit and warmth and a nice marriage that survives the tests of life. HBO and the BBC could do it justice...

    Thanks for reading!

  79. Why can't season 4 be a BAD dream that Mary has??? She can wake up in Scotland still pregnant - Matthew won't be dead (this will give Dan a season to re-consider his bad, bad decision) and then S5 can start again with Mary being pregnant about to give birth. This would be a great way to keep the new characters who will still come to visit - Mary will be very confused and since she will be trying to live up to Matthew's image of her as a perfect woman, wife and mother she will be stressed out, overtired and sleep-deprived - like all new moms, this lending to possible romantic tension with the other suitors from S4!

This also gives a couple more years to the Dowagers story line which is becoming an issue for the writers and we all know that they defiantly do not want to write her off!

Edith is OK, Tom the chauffeur is ludicrous in the part of the tuxeoded moron. Love Cora, best of all. Matthew is a lout for leaving us, he was wonderful, maybe it could have been Mary's bad dream and bring him back. Also, could all these Brits speak a little slower for us Yanks across the sea. As for the nanny for Branson, that would again be obvious and I don't like to see these things coming. It is true to say that rose is young silly and foolish but she is also a very sweet girl as evidenced in her exuberance to teach Anna to dance. Both Bates and Anna like her again a sign of a worthy character. I think rose will be deeply affected also by Matthews passing as we can recall how eagerly she greeted him at Doneagle..after all he really stood up for her..I think his death will have a far reaching affect on her character. I belive her relationship with tom will begin with this mutual shared mourning for Matthew who had been a great defender of both of them. I can see their relationship evolve in the Emma/Mr Knightly manner as tom reprimands her and advises her when she is in the wrong..from this I can see love perhaps blossoming over time...but it will mean rose's character will mature as she in essence grows up and changes into a worthy partner for our beloved tom!

  94. Mathew leaving DA was a killer (pardon the pun). However, fame and fortune can be dangerous things. No doubt Dan Stevens has found out that while sometimes there is a light at the end of the tunnel it turns out the light is an oncoming train. He will probably rue the day he left for what he thought would be greener pastures. I hope that JF doesn't write him back in if he asks. We are all used to be fact that he's gone and as the British say we have to "keep calm & carry on". Would've liked to have seen all the reactions to his death though. Starting the story six months after his death seems to leave out the best part of his death, as long as he had to be written out at a point where everyone was hooked.

I would like, if Dan Stevens doesn't come back, to see Girard Butler come in as Mary's new love interest. Supposedly, Shrimpy is in financial trouble and has to sell his castle and properties to pay his debts. Why not have Girard Butler come in as the new Lord of the castle and fall for Mary. Afterall, Mary is crazy about Scotland and wants to be close to all aspects of Scottish life. I am sure he would be quite the match for her and the courtship would be full of fire and drama. I can think of all sorts of situations for storylines in that relationship.

However, to see Tom Cullen come in as some type of savior doesn't appeal to me at all. He seems to be lacking all the way around. Let's put some zing/twists in the drama. Also, I can't see Mary giving up her uppity victorian values and fall for the chauffeur. What she needs is to be up against someone who can give her a run for her money. Someone who is already rich and doesn't need her money or the title. Wouldn't everyone out there like to see her brought down a couple of pegs by a overwhelmingly handsome magnetic man. She could tell him how much she loves and adores him and he could say to her "I know you do". Much like she told Mathew. I THEREFORE SAY "BRING IT ON GIRARD"!

  95. Does anyone else see Tom and Mary getting together, or would that be too obvious? I am very sad at the creators killing off Matthew, but now that Tom is a more regular character, any quite frankly, that they have mellowed him out and made him more likable, he can fill the place in the cast that Matthew previously did. Thoughts anyone?
