Downton Abbey Season 4 Character Update: Downton Abbey's First Black Character *Spoilers*

Downton Abbey Season 4 Character Update. *Spoiler*

People have been asking when Downton Abbey would have it's first black character and it appears we have our answer.

According to The Sun (via casting notes sent out to actor agents last month), Downton Abbey is adding its first black character.

The character is called Jack Ross. He is black, good looking, charming, 25 - 30 year old musician/singer at an exclusive club in the 20s.

Another new character is a party-loving cad called Sir John Bullock who “must be able to act drunk”.

Either one of these could be a possible love interest for Lady Rose.

We already know about Sir Anthony Gillingham, Lady Mary's new love interest. He is a “good looking, very charismatic” 35 to 45-year-old with a “perfect cut glass accent. He is warm and charming, but also a strong man with morals.”  He also helps the Crawley's with their money troubles.

We will probably be seeing Martha Levinson again. Shirley MacLaine has expressed interest in returning and Julian Fellowes has said he would love to have her back if schedules can be worked out.

All though there is no official confirmation on Downton Abbey adding it's first black character you can read Julian Fellowes thoughts about making the show more diverse here.

  1. Not too much Shirley MacLaine, I hope. Her character was grating. David Oakes (Borgias, Pillars of the Earth) might make a good John Bullock.
