Downton Abbey Addicts Giveaway! Win a Copy of "Servants" by Lucy Lethbridge

Edit: Thank you to everyone who entered!!! 3 winners have been selected by - Carolsue A., Colleen T. and Julie R. Emails have been sent notifying the winners and they have 24 hours to respond or another winner will be selected.

Downton Abbey Addicts is excited to be giving away a copy of the book Servants: A Downstairs History of Britain from the Nineteenth Century to Modern Times by Lucy Lethbridge to three lucky winners!!! That's right three winners will be chosen! The contest is open to US residents only.

This book is a fascinating portrait of life in service from the Edwardin period to the 1970's. It is perfect reading during this Downton Abbey lull and would also make a wonderful Christmas gift for any DA fan.

Here is a synopsis:

From the immense staff running a lavish Edwardian estate to the lonely maid-of-all-work cooking in a cramped middle-class house, domestics were essential to the British way of life. They were hired not only for their skills but also to demonstrate the social standing of their employers, even as they were required to tread softly and blend into the background. But how did these countless men and women live? How did they view their employers and one another? And how did they experience the rapid social change of the twentieth century? They were a diverse group that shaped and witnessed major changes in the modern home, family, and social order.

Spanning over a hundred years, Lucy Lethbridge, through letters and diaries brings, to life the butlers and lady's maids, the nannies and cleaners who have largely been ignored by history.  She also interviews former and current servants for their recollections of this waning profession.

At the fore are the experiences of young girls who slept in damp corners of basements, kitchen maids who were required to stir eggs until the yolks were perfectly centered, and cleaners who had to scrub floors on their hands and knees despite the wide availability of vacuum cleaners. We also meet a lord who solved his inability to open a window by throwing a brick through it and Winston Churchill’s butler who did not think Churchill would know how to dress on his own.

The giveaway ends 11/19/13 at 12:00am EST. There are several ways to enter:

The Book Shelf: New Downton Inspired E-Book 'Doubting Abbey'

A new Downton inspired e-book is about to debut called Doubting Abbey by Samantha Tonge.

Swapping downstairs for upstairs… How hard can it be!? Look up the phrase ordinary girl and you’ll see a picture of me, Gemma Goodwin – I only look half-decent after applying the entire contents of my make-up bag, and my dating track-record includes a man who treated me to dinner…at a kebab shop. No joke! The only extraordinary thing about me is that I look EXACTLY like my BFF, Abbey Croxley. Oh, and that for reasons I can’t explain, I've agreed to swap identities and pretend be her to star in the TV show about her aristocratic family’s country estate, Million Dollar Mansion. So now it’s not just my tan I’m faking – it’s Kate Middleton style demure hemlines and lady-like manners too. And amongst the hundreds of fusty etiquette rules I'm trying to cram into my head, there are two I really must remember; 1) No-one can ever find out that I’m just Gemma, who'd be more at home in the servants quarters. And 2) There can be absolutely no flirting with Abbey’s dishy but buttoned-up cousin, Lord Edward. Aaargh, this is going to be harder than I thought…

Author Samantha Tonge says she was "fascinated with the popularity of Downton Abbey" and that made her think "it might be fun to put a thoroughly modern girl into a stuffy, conservative aristocratic setting and see how she coped."

Tonge says, "Whilst the book isn’t heavily based on Downton, I like to think the ‘upstairs and downstairs’ characters will appeal to fans of the show. There is stern but goodhearted Scottish cook, Kathleen, the gruff old Earl, arrogant but gorgeous Lord Edward, trigger-happy estate manager Mr Thompson, who wears a Sherlock Holmes hat, and always carries a gun. Plus Lady Constance who must give Gemma a crash-course in how to behave like a lady."

The main problem for the aristocratic Croxley family (in Doubting Abbey) is that – like many stately home owners – they don’t have the financial means to survive and their home is becoming run-down. Applebridge Hall (the Croxley home) MUST win the reality show Million Dollar Mansion, in order to get the money to guarantee its future.

Sounds facinating!

A New Role For Former 'Downton Abbey' Star Dan Stevens

Dan Stevens Joins Night at the Museum 3

It's been confirmed that Downton Abbey's former Matthew Crawley, Dan Stevens, has been cast as the villan 'Lancelot' in the new Night at the Museum 3. He will be joining Ben Stiller and Robin Williams who are reprising their roles as security guard Larry Daley and Teddy Roosevelt.

Congratulations to him!

Downton Abbey's Tom Cullen Joins 'If You See Her'

Here is the press release for Tom Cullen's (Lord Anthony Gillingham) latest project, If You See Her.

TORONTO, November 7, 2013 – Paragraph Pictures announced today that Alex Kingston (“E.R.,” “Doctor Who”), Academy Award nominee Peter Firth (“Equus,” “MI-5”) and Tom Cullen (“Downton Abbey,” “Weekend.”) have joined the cast of Joan Carr-Wiggin’s comedy-drama “If You See Her.” The cast joins previously announced Janet Montgomery (“Spies of Warsaw,” “Our Idiot Brother”) and Sara Paxton (“The Innkeepers,” “Aquamarine”) in a film about secrets and weddings, and best friends forever. The film is shooting on location in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada.
Writer-director Joan Carr-Wiggin says: “We are excited to have Alex, Peter and Tom round out our cast. Peter Firth and Alex Kingston are phenomenal. Tom Cullen is one of the best young actors in the world.”
When Heather (Janet Montgomery) and Sarah Ann (Sara Paxton) were kids they knew they would be best friends forever. But Heather left the small town on the last day of high school vowing never to return. Forced to return when her father (Peter Firth) becomes ill, the cynical young documentary filmmaker is pressured into filming Sarah Ann’s wedding video. Heather is convinced that the anarchist filmmaker and bubbly pink-wearing bride have nothing in common, but as the big day approaches she finds that no one is quite what they seem – especially the old friend she thought she knew better than anyone. Alex Kingston plays Sarah Ann’s mother, a woman with secrets of her own, and Tom Cullen plays the former teacher both Sarah Ann and Heather find themselves attracted to.
“If You See Her” is being produced by David Gordian for Paragraph Pictures and Alan Latham for U.K.-based Green Screen Productions.

Sounds like a great role for Tom!

More J.J. Abrams Love for Downton Abbey

METRO has an interview up with sci-fi guru and filmmaker J.J. Abrams. Most of the interview is about the new Star Wars project he is helming but Downton Abbey is mentioned:

You visited the set of Downton Abbey. What do you like about it? It’s absolute soap opera done triple-A plus. The characters go places you never expect and the rules of that society allow for wonderful storytelling because there is behaviour that’s forbidden, which barely exists any more. It’s cleverly written and brilliantly cast. It lets you enjoy what is, at the core, a pulpy family drama but done with such respect and regard for the characters, you feel they’re all alive. And think of how many there are – I thought we had a lot of characters on Lost but it’s amazing they’re able to spin that many plates and make you feel for them all.

Abrams visited the Downton Abbey set last May and posted this adorable photo of Mrs Hughes (Phyllis Logan) and himself on his Twitter:
